The Ways of Jesus-Passion
What do we do when the future we believed God was building for us suddenly begins to fall apart? Luke 24 takes us to the road to Emmaus, where two disciples are walking away from Jerusalem carrying grief, disappointment, and shattered hope. They had believed. They had followed. They had trusted Jesus. And now, everything they thought was coming next seemed to be gone.
Their words, “We had hoped,” are simple, but they carry so much weight. Most of us have had our own “we had hoped” moments—a relationship we were sure would work out, a healing we prayed for, a season we thought would last, or a direction we believed God had made clear.
But there is something these disciples could not see: Jesus was walking right beside them. The One they thought they had lost was present with them the entire time. They were grieving what they thought was the end, while Jesus was already walking them into something they could not yet understand.
That is the heart of this message: just because we cannot see what God is doing does not mean God is doing nothing. Pain can narrow our vision and make one chapter feel like the final page. But God is still present, still working, and still writing the story.
Sometimes faith is simply choosing to keep walking when we don’t understand where the road is leading, trusting that Jesus is closer than we realize and that what feels like the end may only be a part of the story.
